wip - still in development

so...

animation has been getting a huge resurgence in the us. think about all of the big hits since 2020:

unfortunately, this wasn't always the case. animation, during my puberty, was often seen as kid content. or even worse, nerdy shit or weird adult swim buffoonery. while family guy or rick & morty encaptured the mainstream audience, animation in the western hemisphere felt stale and less dynamic compared to its japanese and online counterparts.

anime/manga is hugely popular in japan. to be more honest, this industry suffers severe over-saturation. but through this mascoschistic way of living, artists find their way to stardom through either:

i'm here to hammer down on the latter. being an indecisive art lover, i found myself buried in anything art-related outside of the usual journey for a career that would satisfy my vietnamese family (didn't accomplish that but the money at least made them nag less). anime/manga was a huge part of this escape. and through these sleepless nights and missed classes, i found myself fascinated. some of these were densely pigmented yet soft in texture? others had these huge stylized eyes with absurd color-combinations yet felt as if real eyes were gazing back? this was just color and lines but the expressive uses of them enamored me the same way an astrologist would with halley's comet passing the earth. i would find myself disintegrate as the sun rose, wondering if i could run on two hours before my day started. but do i regret it? maybe my time management but not the experiences of finding the works forever imprinted in my imagination.

list of beautiful recs:

again, anime/manga is still a huge part of japan's capital so the majority reeks of hot garbage. I compiled a few gems that i found in the mass for myself to rewatch later and perhaps, for you readers, to hopefully experience sleepless nights as well.

toilet-bound hanako-kun (anime & manga)

land of the lustrous (anime & manga)

monogatari (anime)

witch hat atelier (manga)

blue giant (manga)

tokyo ghoul (manga)

gundam: the origin (manga)

list of artists/studios:

i can't help but recommend artists as well. while manga-heavy here, you'll find yourself picking up one of their works and easily reading along as if it was a children picture book. on the animation-side, i can really say nothing else besides their ability to paint so fluidly and clearly on the screen:

akira toriyama (manga)

fujimoto (manga)

osamu tezuku (manga)

kyoto animation (anime)

studio trigger (anime)

sunrise (anime)

afterthoughts

hopefully you reached this checkpoint. down below is the top link that will take you to the top of the page. right where you can either check out other posts or x out of this and move along with your life. thank you for reading this one hell of a dense post and hope you enjoyed my recs.
