the journey
kickstarter -> 2014 hit -> dlc & collabs -> treasure trove
what is shovel knight?
-
og, from the kickstarter, released in 2014. this game was released way before the huge resurgence of metroidvania hits like hollow knight, celeste, and heavy rain.
-
was made to resemble 8-bit classics and spin up a more modern gameplay. worked miraculously and can be argued to be the initiation for the indie-game trend that still exist today.
-
2014 and before, these type of games were not given attention by aaa studioes. mega man, metroid, and many others were put back on dev bookshelves as more graphically realistic or moba or fps games took priority.
-
furthermore, even after the initial hit, dlcs were made with additional gameplay for different characters:
- plague knight
- spector knight
- king knight
-
even more, the story plots in the dlcs were spectacular. imagine playing an 8-bit castlevania with character development and subplots? weird that this concept being a hit is so obvious but no one really capitalized on it.
-
it's kind of like how undertale became so huge. nostalgic gameplay, amazing plot, and pixel-like music? a combo that worked back then and now.
-
an indie cornerstone
gameplay:
- simple -> move, jump, strike, interact, relics
- enemies -> very nes-like but more dynamic
- bosses - nes-like as well
- quick game with a cute world
recommendations
- shovel knight: treasure trove
- azure striker gunvolt
- mina: the hollower (wip)
